Mike Huckabee’s Race for Vice-President

By Trenton Hansen ~ February 2nd, 2008 @ 4:34 pm

Why is Mike Huckabee still in the race for the nomination? There is really no way he can win the nomination–he just hasn’t demonstrated that he has the needed support. So you have to ask, what does his refusal to give up the race say about him? Although several reasons have been discussed as to why he has not dropped out yet, I think an analysis will show that Mike Huckabee is in it for his own political gain.

1. He is in it because he doesn’t like Mitt Romney. There are several reports abroad about Huckabee’s dislike of Mitt. What are they rooted in? Does Mike see Mitt as a threat? That’s likely, considering that Mitt has a much broader base of support. Mitt appeals to Conservatives of all stripe (at least, the honest ones), and to moderates.

Huckabee may have inadvertently given away his innermost thoughts when he made statements disparaging Mitt’s religion. Many evangelical Christians don’t like Mormons simply because of their perceptions of Mormonism as a cult, accurate or not.

2. He is in it because he believes that John McCain is the best candidate for the position. This is what many of McCain’s supporters are saying. They believe Huckabee is in it to act as a spoiler in favor of McCain.

There are a couple of ways to look at this. Let’s suppose we poll Huckabee’s supporters and determine to which candidate they would throw their support if he were no longer in the race. If most of his support would shift to Mitt, then Huckabee is implicitly denying Mitt the support he might otherwise have had. In other words, he is toying with the voters. In my opinion, that’s not very gracious.

On the other hand, if Huckbee’s support would shift to McCain, then it makes no sense at all for Huckabee to stay in the race; McCain would have an even larger lead than before, and it would be counterproductive for Huckabee to remain. And if McCain really is the best candidate, why doesn’t Huckabee drop out and let the voters prove it?

Personally I think he has not dropped out so that he can act as a spoiler against Romney (whom both he and McCain personally dislike), ingratiate himself to John McCain, and win the nod for VP. Really, nothing else makes sense. Huckabee wants a way in, and he sees a way by throwing Mitt Romney under the bus for John McCain.

The problem with this is two-fold. First it is not very “Republican.” Many Conservatives may see it as a violation of Conservative principles. Second, he would be joining a ticket that will not lead to the White House. A McCain/Huckabee team would not be enough to overcome Hillary or Obama (or both, heaven forbid).

    Super Tuesday
The stakes are high on Super Tuesday for the republican parties’ presidential contenders, but it could not be higher for them than it is for America.
It is very important for the voter to do some homework this weekend so that we as a nation do not end up with a severe case of buyers’ remorse on Wednesday morning. We must be true to our roots and not allow the wolves in sheep’s clothing to rob us blind, and deprive us of who we are, and what we represent as a people once enlightened with the vision of Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush.
There are wolves and they have been running a well coordinated attack, and have already taken some of our associates down. These wolves have us on the run and have begun to strategically divide us, and scatter us in preparation for the final move, the destruction of liberty. They want to chase us down the dark road to socialism. We need to rally around our core principles and adhere to them. We must ensure the safety, and success of our parties’ great but now endangered legacy. We need to rise up with a united voice and cast our vote this coming Tuesday, to the only conservative out there; that man is Mitt Romney. Vote Mitt Romney President of the United States of America in 2008.

With the recent victory of John McCain in Florida, the implosion of Rudy’s campaign, and the Huckster’s refusal to get off of McCain’s lap; success for Mitt Romney seems to be dissipating quickly. The Republican Party is being hijacked by a highly sinister group of liberal democrats dressed in sheep’s clothing; by liberals hell bent on the destruction of the American dream and way of life. These men seek power more than the welfare of their fellow countrymen. If John McCain happens to win the republican nomination by trickery, well shame on you America for not doing your homework. You are going to get what you deserve. I have watched this nomination as closely as anyone since its beginning and I am sickened to the core at what I am witnessing. The hard fact is that Mitt Romney was the only viable candidate for this election cycle. He is truly the only conservative in the race.John McCain is not a conservative and Mike Huckabee is not a conservative. Fred Thompson was, but was way out of his league this time, and he wisely saw that, and resigned his campaign to the annals of history. My plea today is that we, as the base of the Republican Party, stand up to these imposters who will say and do anything to impose their ill will upon the American people. Toss them out onto their faces and elect the one and only true conservative Mitt Romney.Vote Mitt Romney President of the United States of America in 2008.

It could be said that Thompson was a spoiler for Huckabee because he kept him from winning SC. It could be said that Romney was a spoiler for Huckabee because he split the conservative votes and was in with Gov. Blunt in Missouri sending push calls telling folks a vote for Huckabee was a vote for McCain. (Huckabee lost Missouri by 1%). Truth be told, no-one was a spoiler for the other, everyone had the right to be in the race til someone got 1191 (rules set forth by the GOP itself). Now, if your man didn’t have the guts to stick it out til the end, please don’t blame Mike Huckabee. He stayed in the race because he cared more about the principles and the people he ran for than winning the contest. It was important for him to get his message out there as long as he could and Huckabee has spent his entire life fighting against the odds and beating them. He did this once again. You do not give him credit for having the MOST fiscally successful race of ANY candidate. He got more delegates per $ spent than anyone. The fact that he wasn’t in the the Washington elite who could raise millions for him is actually a good thing. Didn’t we say all along we don’t want a Washington Insider??? Set aside Huck’s religion and take a look at his record in Arkansas and you will see he has alot to offer. If you don’t agree with him politically ok, don’t try and make him to have run some type of unethical race when he and McCain both ran ethical, decent races. The comment where he asked a Religion student who was a reporter a simple question that got reported was blown totally out of control (I can see why because that is the ONLY thing you can find of so called dirt on him). He immediately apologized to Mitt about that. Mitt never apologized for negative ads on McCain and Huckabee or “hiring” Club For Growth to distort his record. I think we can both agree Mitt played dirtier than the other two. The best two men were left standing at the end.
